Video Yoyo Review of the Void by ILYY

Hey there yoyo'ers.

I completed my 50hrs spinning the I Love Yoyo Void, which is considered to be a "budget" yoyo.
Personally I think that while this yoyo costs less than other ILYY yoyos as a result of its less complex production compared to other ILYY offerings, it's anything but a compromised yoyo in terms of what "budget" usually means. If a yoyo of this quality were released by one of the large producers, it would be considered a premium in the line and probably cost more.

This yoyo comes in the grindable and tough ILYY candodized finish in blue, red and in a limited edition laser engraved black. There were also a few produced in the same golden finish used in the Lynx but I'm pretty sure they're not available because otherwise I'd sell my shoes to have one.

The Void is available at Yoyo Expert for 79.99

Here's the review...

Here are my notes taken during the testing of the ILYY Void:

• The Void is a Candodized V shape yoyo with a catch zone that initially gave me the impression of Brutalist Architecture with its hard cut lines and flat surfaces, which carries over to the inner cup up to the rounded divet in the post. Although this is a "budget" yoyo in terms of the ILYY line (79$ at YoyoExpert) so far in my testing I'd say that if this were out of one of the larger producers it would easily be considered a 'premium' throw in their line. Keeping in mind "budget" when it comes to the incredible design and precise construction that comes out of ILYY doesn't mean budget in terms of quite a few other brands.

• At the moment I'm testing this yoyo using the Toxic "Atomic Wonder LE" strings, the slick feel of these strings and thin and slightly stiff break in seem to be a nice match with this throw. I'm using a dry stock ILYY bearing which in itself is very high quality and has long spin times. I'll also pop in a Terrapin coated ILYY bearing at some point for comparison, however the Void doesn't suffer from any playability or weight distribution issues that would have me switch to a coated bearing for even my long-form style of play.

• The well where the bearing sits is cut very deep, giving the Void a slim 4mm gap, this intentionally thin gap provided by the deep cut well combined with the hot red sILLYcone gives this yoyo very snappy single layer binds, but also stays out of your way otherwise as the deep V draws the string into the center.

• So you might ask (and you may) why is this well designed and optimally functional yoyo, with the candy blasted candodized finish, ILYY's premium quality bearing and hot red response, inexpensive in terms of the ILYY line. Well, it's very simple, there are less cuts and curves in this yoyo compared to the usual rounded and complex flowing waves of the usual ILYY design, the Lynx is a perfect example of that complexity. The Void however doesn't suffer from this simplicity, its harder cut straight lines don't compromise play at all.

• Another little thing that's pretty important to mention here is the perfect balance of this yoyo. Not only on a throw in terms of being able to right itself even on an off center throw, which it does beautifully, but this thing is so well balanced that I've found that even when barely spinning, and with a twist tensioned string, it still holds its balance well enough to simply pull it into a bind and get it moving again.

• In a last bit of irony, the soundtrack I've been testing the Void to is The Talking Heads Speaking in Tongues, and one thing this throw doesn't do is Make Flippy Floppy.
